MUMBAI, INDIA: Dilip Joshi, whose Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah persona Jethalal has taken on a new identity, celebrates his birthday today. While he has no plans to celebrate because of the Covid issue, this may be the ideal opportunity to reflect on his path as an actor and as a person. He discusses Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and plays ‘Jetha’ in an exclusive interview with IndianExpress.com.

The 54-year-old praised God, saying he still doesn’t understand how the programme gets so much affection. “God has been gracious. We will shortly be 14 years old. It’s a strange sensation, as if I’m dreaming. It’s strange that people still love us. “We are simply blessed,” he says.

Dilip Joshi discussed how he met inventor Asit Kumarr Modi in college when he first joined Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Modi did not even audition the actor, knowing his acting ability, and instead offered him the role of Jethalal or Champaklal in the programme. “He stated I could do both and hence had a choice.” I wasn’t sure about Champak, so I went with Jetha. Even this guy was unlike anything we’d read about in Taarak Mehta’s writings. Champak was conceptualised and designed in a totally distinct light by Asit ji, who positioned the show in society rather than a chawl. And the best thing was that he found the proper performers for each role. Everything just fell in place for the show, and we managed to create magic.”
