New Delhi, India : Officials claimed on Wednesday that the Centre has provided the NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu with a Z+ security cover of CRPF commandos.
A senior official told PTI that the armed squad took over Ms Murmu’s protection early Wednesday morning.

Ms Murmu, a party leader from Odisha who served as Jharkhand governor, was revealed as the party’s candidate during a news conference Tuesday night following a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top leaders.

Soon after this declaration, the Union home ministry authorised the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to send its VIP protection squad to take control of Ms Murmu’s security, according to officials.

The home ministry’s decision was based on a danger perception security report issued by federal security agencies for the NDA presidential contender, according to authorities.

A squad of roughly 14-16 members from the Odisha-based paramilitary force has taken up the responsibility of providing protection for Ms Murmu. They will accompany her around the state and country, according to officials.

Her residence in Rairangpur, Odisha, will also be secured by security officers.

Ms Murmu is likely to travel widely over the next month to meet with lawmakers and leaders of several political parties in order to gain support for her candidacy, according to sources.

The commando squad is anticipated to protect her until she takes over as the country’s first citizen, which is a real possibility given the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s strong showing (NDA).

The CRPF protects VIPs such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Congress party’s first family, which includes party president Sonia Gandhi and her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, among others.

The Centre gave a similar security cover of the ‘black cats’ NSG commandos to NDA presidential candidate and current President Ram Nath Kovind in 2017.

The presidential election to replace President Kovind will take held on July 18, with the results expected on July 21.

The tenure of President Kovind will expire on July 24.
