Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha has been named the united Opposition candidate in the 2019 presidential elections. Sinha will file his nomination papers at 11:30 a.m. on June 27.

TMC leader Sinha stated on Tuesday that it was time to move above party politics and fight for the greater national good. The decision came shortly after the TMC announced his candidacy as the united Opposition candidate for the top job.

“I am grateful to Mamataji for the honour and status she bestowed on me as a member of the TMC.” Now is the time for me to leave the party in order to strive for greater opposition unity for a wider national cause. “I’m sure she approves of the move,” Sinha said on Twitter.

Opposition leaders decided on Sinha’s nomination during a Parliament annexe meeting called by NCP chief Sharad. The Congress, NCP, TMC, CPI, CPI-M, Samajwadi Party, National Conference, AIMIM, RJD, and AIUDF were among the parties present at the conference.

“I’d like to congratulate Yashwant Sinha on his election as the consensus candidate, who has the backing of all progressive opposition parties. A guy of immense honour and intelligence, who will undoubtedly maintain the ideals that define our wonderful nation, “said Mamata Banerjee

“There could not have been a better choice for all progressive parties that share the same goal for our nation,” stated TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee.

Previously, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chairman Sharad Pawar, National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah, and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi have declined proposals to be the unified Opposition presidential candidate.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee convened a conference of 17 opposition parties on June 15 to seek agreement on an unified presidential candidate to oppose the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, with numbers on its side, the NDA is poised to assure its candidate’s win in the presidential elections.

The election will take place on July 18, and the results will be announced on July 21. If voting takes place, it will take place in Delhi.
